Choosing the right Wedding Photographer is one of the most important things you will do when planning your wedding. You want to have a lasting memory of your special day with photographs you will cherish, but where do you start? Wedding Photography is an important investment, something you will hand down to future generations and so obviously you want to get it right. We hope the information on this page will supply you with some good solid advice when you are choosing your Wedding Photographer.
These days with the popularity and increasing capabilities of the digital camera, it seems everyone either wants to be or thinks they are a professional wedding photographer.
The photography industry has been flooded with Wedding Photographers in recent years and it's hard to know what to look for if you want to avoid your wedding being photographed by someone who calls themselves a photographer, rather than an experienced photographer who does this for a living.
One of the first things to make sure of is that you employ a full time Photographer, not just someone doing weddings at weekends for a bit of extra money.
Make sure the Photographer is properly qualified. This can be hard as there are many associations awarding qualifications these days. The Master Photographers Association (MPA) & the British Institute Of Professional Photography (BIPP) are the only two associations with recognised photography qualifications. To be a qualified member of either of these two associations, you have to prove you work to an extremely high standard and you also have to be practicing photography full time.
Another very important thing to consider is that with the MPA, the full time photographer has to provide proof that they have Professional Indemnity Insurance and Public Liability Insurance. If the worst happened and a photographer ruined your wedding photographs and had no insurance, then you would have no comeback whatsoever.
Once you have completed these checks and you have a short list of photographers you like, spend some time visiting them to look more closely at their work. Websites are great for getting a feel for the style of photography you like, but remember flashy websites can make photographs look better than they actually are. So, ask to see a few complete wedding albums when visiting their studio so you can check for things like consistency and print quality. Most photographers can produce one or two lovely shots form a wedding but can they repeat that right through the album and for every album?
Look at the posing the photographer does with the couple and their guests. Do the people look comfortable or does the pose look awkward? Do the subjects expressions look relaxed and natural, or stiff and uncomfortable? You want to be able to relax and enjoy having your wedding pictures taken, not feel silly or embarrassed.
And last of all, do you like the photographer? Did you get on well during the consultation? Can you see yourself spending a big part of your biggest day with them?
If their work impressed you, they're full time & qualified and you got on like a house on fire then you've found the right one!
